First ChemArt post

I like to play with chemical structures adding some artistic motif to it. I do it as my hobby and just for fun so this blog is not intended to impress anyone by my skills. Let me know if you enjoy it though :)

First, I wanted to say just a few words about myself and how I got interested in fooling around with molecules.

I got my master degree in Organic chemistry at Moscow State University (Russia). I worked with Dr. S. Z. Vatsadze in laboratory of biologically active compounds and our group is shown on the picture on the right. The whole lab was very big and held together by Distinguished professor N. V. Zyk.
In 2003, I joined the research group of professor Dr. M. A. Petrukhina in University at Albany, NY, USA. The picture of the group has been made sometime in the fall semester of 2003. It has been my great pleasure to have Dr. Petrukhina as my mentor in my PhD studies. I learned a lot from Marina and very grateful to her for that!
I switched from organic chemistry to inorganic/supramolecular chemistry to feed my desire to know different aspects of matter. In particular, I was very happy to learn theory of crystallography. Also, I had a chance to put my hands on X-ray machine thus dealing with the whole process of getting X-ray structures on my own. Many thanks go to professor Dikarev who has been my guide through the pitfalls and debris of crystallography.
Solving structures and working with supramolecular motifs brought me to the point when I wanted to change them the way I like. Blending and filling "cold structures" with beautiful colors and heat, if you like.

Also, I used a "ChemArt" word as a name for my blog because I truly believe that "Art" is an inseparable part of doing chemistry; and may even be a driving force for great scientific discoveries.
